C2C - Essential Mix

Shiny Disco Balls

I've been away for a while, from smashing the decks up at Fit In or Fuck Off to the joys of watching my brother writhe around in A&E; a double ass raping of man-flu to the carnage that was Amsterdam - it's been a tough few weeks. So something thoroughly fly was required to kick off this Friday's fun-time rinse.
So today feast your ears on French Turntabilst quartet, C2C. Here is their Essential Mix (not from the popular BBC Radio 1 series, just a mix that you need to hear) from way back in 2005. Pre Serato so what you hear is a strictly vinyl set produced by 4 Mix Masters, all live and on the fly. Winners of the European Border Breakers Awards 2013 - an award presented at Hollands' Eurosonic Noorderslag Music Festival - the European answer to SXSW, which I'm fully charged to be going to check out in January.
Now these fellas obviously have talent dripping from every pore, so if you enjoy this you should really go check out the new album Tetra, too. Bon Appétit!

Hop-Tu-Naa - A tale of Two Cities

Here's a project I've been playing around with for a while with fellow Manxman Hugo from art duo id-iom. Together we've been making tapes since the beginning of time but since I moved up North we had to come up with a way of making a new mix. The answer lay in Dropbox - I simply laid down some ground rules (2 X 15min mixes each, Halloweenie theme tunes, chuck a few spooky movie quotes in for good measure) and this is what came of it.
Now this method has it's pitfalls; levels all over the chippy, repetition of tunes & trying to kick Hugo's ass into gear and send me his final edit before Halloween... but I'm glad to say I'm pretty happy with how this has turned out. In fact, I like making a tape this way so much we're already working on the next one.

Until then...

DJ COOLHANDLUKE - bangin in the boomboxery Vol. 2

Roller Disco five-o

Back once again with another slice of crispy funk, CoolHandLuke hits us up with this groovy little number. Bangin in my boomboxery Vol. 2 continues the trend of the first mixtape (get it HERE) in serving up full-fat funk breaks over the course of an hour to feed the boogie within. Just what I was looking for on this grey, misty Tuesday morn in Steel City. You'll want to peep this immediately.

Burger me

Burgers.
They're just ace. So the idea of a Green Burger Mixtape sounds pretty tempting, eh? DJ Green Giant from Switzerland is up this week for the Friday Mix. A truly eclectic little number with everything from Cypress Hill to Roy Ayres via Booker T and Erykah Badu. With one theme running throughout - Green. So why the burger?, you ask...
Well they've been on my mind a lot recently. So much so that I've decided to go and 'research' a little known joint hidden away in Manchester's Northern Quarter. Am really looking forward to checking this place out, apparently the place to be for Big American Burgers done proper.  So expect some drool inducing photos up here later. Until then I'll leave you with this double whopper!

The man shows off his soft spot for all things funky in an hour of pure groove. Friday has landed, Enjoy.

A Moneyshot

Been a while since I last posted so thought I'd hit you up with a Brucy Bonus double mix this week as a way of making amends. First up, blog favourite and Master of the art of dusty create digging - DJ Moneyshot. A classic mix from Solid Steel, it's his Deep Covers mixtape - a collection of covers, edits & parodies from a whole host of different artists as only Moneyshot would do, it's a fresh take on some classics and a sweet concept. Nerd Styles

\
An absolute masterclass in mixing today. Founding member of The Scratch Perverts, Vinyl collector and rad turntablist : Mr Thing. His Nerd is Bond mix tape is a slick blend of his favourite breaks and samples from Hip-Hop, scratched up into a tidy little hourish long mp3. This is defiantly a contender for Mix of the Year and has pretty much been on constant repeat in the lab. No file to stream this time; straight to download - but I assure you it'll be worth it.

Sticky Icky, Woo Wee!

Man like the Stickybuds in the captains chair today with his bass-driven, face-melting, rump-shaking smash-up of a mix from this years' Fractal Forest set at Shambhala. If you've not heard him yet, I suggest you check out The Wookie Shuffle, too. A thoroughly rad dude, had the pleasure of chatting with him a couple of months ago outside a warehouse rave in Sheffield before his set. Hope to see him back in the City of Steel soon, 'til then I'll be happily getting down to this.

From his blog...

"Here is the set that I made for my annual performance at Shambhala Music Festival. As always I have poured my heart and soul into making the best set I could, and this year, like every year, it was an amazing time. Thanks to the few thousand people who came to hear it live, and Rich E Rich / Fractal Forest for having me back to play, 8 years counting.
I’d like to also say thanks to all the artists / labels who sent me upfront music, stems, acapellas and anything else I could get out of them… haha. Without you guys I wouldn’t be able to make the arrangements that I do. Almost everything in this set is my own edit for arrangement or what I needed the music to do, but on the track list I have listed the original tracks instead of putting “edit” beside everything…
I sincerely hope you enjoy the music. I’ll be working hard over the next few months writing new records, and getting ready for next years tours…
Stay connected with my music at the following sites…

Greasy

A return to the awesome Frenic today with his Channel Hopper mix from earlier in the year. A slick little 30 min promo skilfully blending a selection of his own tunes with tripped out beats. And if you like what you hear you should check out his excellent blog. Some choice cuts being put up there almost on a daily basis, alongside an aural feast of mix tapes from the man himself. Well worth a goosie-gander.

Beastly

DJ Cheeba, DJ Moneyshot & DJ Food mixed up a storm last night when they made a live mix re-making the Beastie Boys' 'Paul's Boutique'. An absolute bobby belter of a mix collaboration, it made the mundane task of chipping tiles off the kitchen wall seem almost like fun as I listened on Strongroom Alive. Check it out...

From Solid Steel....
3 years ago Solid Steel DJs Cheeba, Moneyshot and Food had the idea of collaborating on a version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album made entirely from the original sample sources, shortly after Moneyshot aired his mix of their ‘Check Your Head’ album in the same way.
Finally the result is here, titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ - each of them have taken a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.
The mix was over half way completed when they heard the tragic news of MCA‘s death in May so the impetus to finish it was instantly doubled and new meaning given to the project. It goes without saying that this is also a tribute to Adam Yauch and the legacy he left behind and we hope it will be embraced by Beastie fans around the globe.
Caught In The Middle of A 3-Way Mix - a tribute to The Beastie Boys' 'Paul's Boutique' album

Better than a free Parker pen, just for enquiring...

Very much looking forward to Shambala this weekend and all the class acts that are on, will be certain to catch Parker amongst others (Friday,Kamikaze Stage 12:45-2)

A little piece of me

Finally managed to get this mixtape finished off before I head off for a couple of weeks in the South, nothing too fresh going on; just a little bit of fun I had whilst waiting for the gas man. 50 minutes of funk taken from the 'new downloads 3' folder on the lappy. It's a bit all over the chippy; and I really need to send myself back to Scratching 101, however my little brother has been on at me to put something up for him for a while so here you are, Gail, this one is for you pal.

Enjoy

Music to ride a bike to

Another Friday mix bomb - and a return to Solid Steel for an Olympic themed couple of hours from Ninja Tune's finest; Coldcut.

...It's a sport related show this week and Coldcut drop a mix dedicated to all things cycling, taking in a few left turns, one or two wobbles and plenty of freewheeling in support of Critical Mass. You'll ride past music for the self propelled from artists like Brentford Allstars, Nazareth, The Orb and Autechre, before reaching the end of the road with Tour De France by Kraftwerk...

Who's next...?

These boys killed it on Saturday, along with Akil they delivered an amazing live show. Sadly I was helping a rather 'Shakey' friend relocate the contents of his pockets after a tumble so missed the end of the set but at least I can get down to this mix; which they have put together to show their love for Lovebox, without any such distractions.

"Ladies and Gentlemen. Today on the eve of London’s weekend of love, we bring you a special new full-on Nextmen mix spanning those artists that have played Lovebox over the past ten years, from Blondie and The Human League to Chase & Status and Katie B.  The Nextmen vs Lovebox 2012 - 10 Years Of Love."

Electric Treats

I've been a busy lad the last few weeks, Tramlines proved to be a success. Followed by an impromptu visit to the Isle of Man to visit the fam, and then straight into Electric Beach down at Watergate Bay, Cornwall. Hong Kong Ping Pong got the party moving whilst The Breaks Collective rinsed it out finishing with an amazing 3 minute megamix of Hip Hop's greatest bangers. Nextmen killed it with J5 's Akil on MC duties, and to round it off none other than De La Soul played to an electric crowd as the sun set. So to kick things off, lets start with a little HKPP....

Fat Chicks Welcome

After what ended up being another kidney explodingly  enormous weekend at Tramlines (big ups to Woody, Irk &  thoroughly well sound dude - Roy Moneyshot, whom I got the chance to chat to after the gig) I've finally managed to remove my head from my hoop and get back on it... I mean back on here...    Yes, time for another slice of Skratch Bastid with his latest mix which is a strictly 100% female thang. This  mixtape has got Summer chill written all over it, just what you want on a glorious Tuesday morn...From The Gaff:

Where does 2 years of 2 dj's lives go when they're not playing shows, being here, there & everywhere? Ladies & gentlemen, let us present you: SOUL SISTERS, STAND UP! The long awaited mix that you've heard us hinting at, emerges July 17th, summer of 2012. This Concept Mix continues the evolution of the DJ for the 21st century, bringing you part DJ MIx, the tracks, & part Dj album, what's BETWEEN the tracks
The Voices and Messages from The Soul Sisters of the 60's & 70's, during radical times in humanity's development, covered such issues as: Women's Emancipation, the Age Of Aquarius, Husbands & Lovers & Fathers sent to War, burgeoning record labels, African American Equality, the american dream; you name it, these chick's dealt with it. Nina, Marlena, Marva, Freda, Aretha, Patti, Lyn, and on and on, they are all an integral part of our musical history and culture, and have shaped the lives of millions and millions of not only our preceding generation, but also ours through legendary status, immortal songs, and the sampling of hip hop culture.
As Bastid says; "this is probably the mixtape that i've worked the hardest on, ever. Gaff and I spent countless hours figuring out just how to give you the goods, and here it is"
Yes. I can verify this. there are segments that you hear that last but a few seconds, but took literally hours and sometimes multiple days just getting that one blend right. Countless versions and tests, Countless songs we LOVE but couldn't include for the almighty flow and sequencing to bring you not just another DJ mix, but also a work of Art, using all our skills and love of the craft to our fullest.
I couldn't be more proud of the final product of this mix and working with The Bastid for 2 years with it has created a mix that is extremely rewarding for all of us
ENJOY IT, and love it!

Cut Chemist releases The Litmus Test mixtape to Soundcloud inviting you to play 'guess that tune' with a half hour mix of everything he released over a 10 year period. He says:

"A mix of everything you thought you heard" There is a piece from every release I ever put out from 1992 to 2002 in this mix. There are pieces from a UCLA art student cd release, an underground rap compilation cassette, J5, Ozomatli, mix cds with Shadow, remixes, etc...its all in there. I encourage folks to identify every piece. Its never been done.

On the rob...

Great mixtape from The Kleptones to start your day with. Funked up beats looped together with some true party bangers makes for a killer set - this is not to be missed!

No shirking, now

Tramlines next week looks like it's going to be a big one. Free festival around Sheffield where many of the city's establishments open up their doors to put on a whole host of free parties with a who's who of talent performing. For me Thirsty Ear's offering in Plug on the Saturday night looks particularly boss, with DJ Woody performing his Turntables in Technicolor set (to which there is a taste of this, HERE) alongside the ever eclectic DJ Moneyshot and the hardest working man in no business, DJ Irk. And so ahead of this colossal meeting of the Titans, DJ Irk has knocked together Vol. 10 of the Irked collection. Enjoy...

Strawberry Surprise

Amazing what this Great British Summer is doing to the garden. A couple of days ago it was looking like a sad year in strawberry town then went out today and BANG! Nature's candy a-pleanty!

Dubinsday

Nice little Drum and Bass mix from Dub Pistol's DJ Barry Ashworth to get you on your way this morning. Their new album Worshipping the Dollar is doing good things for me at the moment, too. A sweet selection of Bass heavy Ska, D&B and Hip-Hop rollers with guest vocalists galore, defiantly one to be checked out. Pin It

Phat Controller

Off to a demonstration of this device in a couple of weeks, amazing to see how quickly this technology is evolving and integrating into traditional DJing techniques. Moldover shows us where he's at. Pin It
