Boca 45 -Live at Thirsty Ear Jukebox 45s 06/04/13

Here is the first 90 mins of Boca 45's gig at The Harley for last Saturday's Thirsty Ear Jukebox 45s night. It's a tasty selection of funky 7"s to get those toes tapping this Tuesday morn. Slick flyer art by Mister Hope, too.

Jules X - Playground 4, Boca 45 - Solid Steel 01/07/11

Ahoy-hoy,

I'm back from my trip to Switzerland, and what a lot of fun it was playing Après sets in the shadow of the mighty Dom mountain at Snowpoint Bar & Grill - big up yourself Laura, Henry,Tricky and Hev - cheers for having me. Also props to Flav at Nightlife for hosting the annual SFDJ competition once again (you can check out my drunken offerings from the first heat here). Sadly didn't get to retain the crown, but a thoroughly brillo night, none the less. Congrats go out to DJ Hometown for delivering the winning set. Jaguar Skills - Various/Rogue Fader -Spring Forward

Hello there, and firstly, a pinch and a punch. White rabbits, no returnsies. Welcome to another mix post from yours truly. And it's a bumper selection today, no less than 4 mixes for you!. All because Jaguar Skills and his Amazing Friends are in Leeds this weekend and through a bit of last minute line up change around I've managed to bag myself a warm up set on the night, a set I'm very much looking forward to. So it seems only right to rack up a Jag Skills mix for todays selection, but which one to go for? There's literally* hundreds of them out there, so here are a few that should get you cheesing your face off in no time...

But wait, even these three mixes don't actually add up to an hour. So as a little extra today, and as it is meteorogically the first day of Spring, I give you my latest mix - Spring Forward. A small collection of some of the tunes I've been in to recently (as you can see I was quite excited about photographing Pharcyde the other week!)

*haven't actually counted

DJ Premier Twelve 12′s special - Spin Doctor

Back once again with a beast of a mixtape to get your Friday off to a tip-top start. And I have to say I am really looking forward to tonights gig -  The Get Down with your girlfriends favourite DJ Moneyshot back up in the city of 7 hills amongst T-Funk, Lionel Vinyl and Arnivore, the night promises to be an aural assault of straight up block party funk and hip hop. A real treat for us up here, I'm sure you'll agree.
So to get things started this week we have Hip Hop supremo Spin Doctor mixing up his second DJ Premier special for Southern Hospitality Records Twelve 12s series (you can get the first one here). 12 vinyl, all DJ Premier tracks, with usual suspects Biggie, Snoop, Guru & ODB to name but a few. Nuff said. Perfect to get you in the groove for the DJ Premier gig in Brixton next week, which I'm gutted I won't be able to go to. Alas, I'll have to make do with this.
Until next time...

When Hip Hop Meets Video Games - Andy Peek

Oh Shit!

Well hello there,

Welcome to another instalment of the Rogue Fader mix blog. Fresh off the back of The Pharcyde gig at the weekend, which had me smiling from ear to ear it has to be said. Those fellas certainly know how to smash up the dancefloor, performing their Bizarre Ride album in its entirety (with the occasional break for a j) in Leeds on Saturday night.
Was shaping up to be a big night however due to a bit of weekend copper theft between Shef and Leeds my train was sent on its own little bizarre ride diverting to Donny and alcohol UNfriendly York station before having to catch another one back to Leeds arriving a cool 4 hrs late. A shame as the word was main man Andy Peek was on warm up detail with Dr Syntax commandeering the mic. Good job then that there are a whole host of mixes by the man online (check out the Surround Yo' Sound Show)

Which brings me to today's choice - When Hip Hop meets Video games. A gem of a mix that Andy did for the Hip Hop Chip Shop. Full of old school computer game samples tightly mixed together with choice hip hop cuts, it will bring out your inner nerd guessing that game.

Check it out...

Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde : Official 20th Anniversary Mixtape - Chris Read

Hello there,

and a very Happy New Year to you all.

Am I still aloud to wish that this late in the month... hmm not so sure. Probably a bit late to be hyping the new year, now that I've pretty much broken all my resolutions. Well, I did shave off my beard. Yes it's been a tough few weeks... a self imposed ban on liquor seems to be flavour of the month, whilst I try to work out what constitutes as 'the perfect burger.' I'll keep you posted on that. Anyway, certainly today I can say a very Happy Birthday to Peeky.

Now then, let's get into the business of what's been in rotation recently. And ahead of next months Pharcyde gig in Leeds, which I am super excited about, here is a tasty little mix from Chris Read (musicofsubstance) for Delicious Vinyl in conjunction with Wax Poetics celebrating last years 20th anniversary of the originative debut: Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde and the start of their European tour. The mix is a blend of original tracks, remixes, and original sample material, as well as some instrumentals and other treats. Check out the full write up on Wax Poetics here, and on musicofsubstance. Top quality stuff, for sure.

enjoy your friday

C2C - Essential Mix

Shiny Disco Balls

I've been away for a while, from smashing the decks up at Fit In or Fuck Off to the joys of watching my brother writhe around in A&E; a double ass raping of man-flu to the carnage that was Amsterdam - it's been a tough few weeks. So something thoroughly fly was required to kick off this Friday's fun-time rinse.
So today feast your ears on French Turntabilst quartet, C2C. Here is their Essential Mix (not from the popular BBC Radio 1 series, just a mix that you need to hear) from way back in 2005. Pre Serato so what you hear is a strictly vinyl set produced by 4 Mix Masters, all live and on the fly. Winners of the European Border Breakers Awards 2013 - an award presented at Hollands' Eurosonic Noorderslag Music Festival - the European answer to SXSW, which I'm fully charged to be going to check out in January.
Now these fellas obviously have talent dripping from every pore, so if you enjoy this you should really go check out the new album Tetra, too. Bon Appétit!

DJ COOLHANDLUKE - bangin in the boomboxery Vol. 2

Roller Disco five-o

Back once again with another slice of crispy funk, CoolHandLuke hits us up with this groovy little number. Bangin in my boomboxery Vol. 2 continues the trend of the first mixtape (get it HERE) in serving up full-fat funk breaks over the course of an hour to feed the boogie within. Just what I was looking for on this grey, misty Tuesday morn in Steel City. You'll want to peep this immediately.

Beastly

DJ Cheeba, DJ Moneyshot & DJ Food mixed up a storm last night when they made a live mix re-making the Beastie Boys' 'Paul's Boutique'. An absolute bobby belter of a mix collaboration, it made the mundane task of chipping tiles off the kitchen wall seem almost like fun as I listened on Strongroom Alive. Check it out...

From Solid Steel....
3 years ago Solid Steel DJs Cheeba, Moneyshot and Food had the idea of collaborating on a version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album made entirely from the original sample sources, shortly after Moneyshot aired his mix of their ‘Check Your Head’ album in the same way.
Finally the result is here, titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ - each of them have taken a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.
The mix was over half way completed when they heard the tragic news of MCA‘s death in May so the impetus to finish it was instantly doubled and new meaning given to the project. It goes without saying that this is also a tribute to Adam Yauch and the legacy he left behind and we hope it will be embraced by Beastie fans around the globe.
Caught In The Middle of A 3-Way Mix - a tribute to The Beastie Boys' 'Paul's Boutique' album

Cut Chemist releases The Litmus Test mixtape to Soundcloud inviting you to play 'guess that tune' with a half hour mix of everything he released over a 10 year period. He says:

"A mix of everything you thought you heard" There is a piece from every release I ever put out from 1992 to 2002 in this mix. There are pieces from a UCLA art student cd release, an underground rap compilation cassette, J5, Ozomatli, mix cds with Shadow, remixes, etc...its all in there. I encourage folks to identify every piece. Its never been done.
